Jakarta Residents Shelter from Intense Heat as Skies Remain Thin with Cloud
Residents walk with their heads covered to shelter from the intense sun in the Dukuh Atas area of Jakarta, Tuesday (17 March 2026). The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) anticipates clear to partly cloudy weather will persist from morning through afternoon across all regions of Jakarta.
In the Early Warning forecast for the period 16–20 March, no areas of the Greater Jakarta region show potential for moderate or heavy rainfall intensity.
Weather conditions in Jakarta and its surroundings differ significantly from several other regions that remain at risk of moderate to heavy rainfall.
The BMKG states that the “blistering heat” conditions occur as rainfall distribution shifts towards eastern Indonesia, resulting in several areas experiencing less cloud cover and receiving optimal solar radiation. This is indicated by positive Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) anomalies, which show relatively minimal cloud growth. Additionally, the annual apparent motion of the sun approaching the equatorial region contributes to increased surface heating, causing daytime weather to feel more intense across several areas.
