Jakarta — The chairman of Jakarta provincial parliament, Khoirudin, has called for the optimisation of the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) facility in Rorotan, North Jakarta, given the large volume of waste in Jakarta and the need for long-term solutions and more modern waste management systems.

“Jakarta produces approximately 8,700 tonnes of waste daily. If permanent solutions are not prepared, then risks such as landslides at the Bantargebang integrated waste treatment facility (TPST) could continue to occur,” said Khoirudin in Jakarta on Thursday.

According to him, the Rorotan RDF must optimise waste management in Jakarta, particularly following recent landslides at the Bantargebang TPST that claimed victims.

For this reason, Khoirudin views the development of RDF facilities as one of the strategic steps in reducing Jakarta’s dependence on the Bantargebang TPST, which currently operates at overcapacity.

Khoirudin stressed that the very large volume of Jakarta’s waste demands long-term solutions and more modern waste management systems.

“The government has allocated trillions of rupiah in funding for the development of RDF facilities so that Jakarta’s waste management operates at maximum efficiency, is safe for the environment, and is sustainable,” he said.

“Facilities like the Rorotan RDF are part of the long-term solution. If built at several locations, we could reduce the waste burden on Bantargebang by approximately 30 percent,” he added.

During a recent visit to the Rorotan RDF, he received briefings from the operators regarding several operational challenges, ranging from waste transport processes to environmental impact management, such as odour and emissions control.

“Waste management is a shared responsibility. I call upon all residents of Jakarta to begin sorting waste at home, because good management upstream will determine the success of the waste treatment system downstream,” he said.
