Jakarta Provincial Government Urged to Engage Maggot Entrepreneurs to Address Waste Crisis
JAKARTA — A member of the Jakarta Regional Representatives Council (DPRD) from the PSI faction, August Hamonangan, has urged the Jakarta Provincial Government to take more seriously the utilisation of maggot entrepreneurs as a solution to address the mounting waste accumulation in the capital city.
“We have many waste recycling entrepreneurs using maggot farming in Jakarta. Going forward, the Jakarta Provincial Government must make these entrepreneurs partners in handling waste in the capital,” August said in a statement on Monday (9 March 2026).
The PSI politician stressed the importance of government support in the form of mentoring and training so that more residents are encouraged to undertake waste recycling enterprises using maggots.
Data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry shows that Jakarta produces approximately 9,000 tonnes of waste daily as of 2025.
Waste disposal facilities such as the Bantar Gebang Waste Processing Site (TPST) are now nearly at full capacity, with frequent waste collapses occurring.
“Jakarta’s waste must be reduced immediately. TPST Bantar Gebang is already critical and landslides happen frequently,” August stated firmly.
August highlighted that alternative solutions such as maggot farming, which can produce compost and creative products, have not been maximally utilised.
“Conventional waste management methods are limited. The Jakarta Provincial Government must engage maggot entrepreneurs as an alternative solution,” he said.
