Jakarta Police Urge Community Organisations to Maintain Tolerance During Ramadan, Refrain from Restaurant Raids
Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) have called on all elements of society, including community organisations, to uphold interfaith tolerance during the holy month of Ramadan. The police specifically urged organisations not to conduct unilateral sweeping operations targeting restaurants.
Head of Public Relations at Polda Metro Jaya, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, appealed to community organisations to refrain from sweeping actions out of respect for members of the public who do not observe the Ramadan fast.
“We hope that in this regard we can strengthen and further solidify our sense of interfaith tolerance. That is why community organisations have been urged not to carry out sweeping operations at restaurants and the like, because there are indeed fellow citizens who do not observe the fast,” Commissioner Budi Hermanto told reporters in North Jakarta on Thursday (19 February 2026).
Budi Hermanto affirmed that regulations governing restaurant operating hours are already set by the local government. He therefore urged the public not to take matters into their own hands and to entrust enforcement to the relevant authorities.
“Polda Metro Jaya is merely issuing an appeal, meaning we should be wiser and not carry out sweeping operations. There are the police, there is the government that can accommodate aspirations from all parties,” he explained.
To enhance security during Ramadan, Polda Metro Jaya has mapped out vulnerable areas and continues to conduct active patrols.
“During the pre-dawn meal period, we have identified many locations that ultimately create vulnerabilities, a fear of crime, a sense of unease within the community,” he said.
He also urged the public to avoid activities deemed inappropriate during Ramadan. Commissioner Budi called on the community, particularly Muslims, to strengthen their faith and devotion during the holy month.
“These places become gathering spots used for improper purposes, and if you will pardon me, for consuming alcoholic beverages, which cause disturbance,” he added.
Furthermore, Commissioner Budi Hermanto urged residents to report any entertainment venues operating beyond their permitted hours or opening earlier than allowed from the afternoon onwards through the 110 call centre.
“This information should also be conveyed to the police, and we will act swiftly to follow up,” he concluded.
