Investigators will question several key parties, including the online taxi driver suspected of being the initial trigger for the incident, as well as the drivers of both affected trains.

The investigation aims to unravel in detail the sequence of events leading up to and following the accident, Budi noted.

In addition to investigating technical aspects and human error, police are also gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses at the scene. A thorough crime scene investigation is being conducted to ensure no details are overlooked.

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police stated that the legal process will be transparent and professional, .and they have not ruled out naming suspects if negligence is found to have contributed to the accident.

The deadly incident reportedly began when an online taxi experienced problems and stopped at a railroad crossing on Ampera Street. The vehicle obstructed the passing commuter train, causing it to stop on the tracks.

The situation quickly worsened when the halted commuter train was struck from behind by the Argo Bromo Anggrek train, en route from Jakarta Gambir to Surabaya Pasar Turi. The violent collision caused severe damage to the trains.

Preliminary data shows the total number of victims has reached 106, with 46 still receiving medical treatment and 44 already discharged. Meanwhile, 16 people have died.

“The increase in the number of fatalities is of concern to us. We hope there are no further casualties,” Budi said.

Amid the investigation, authorities said the victims’ care remains a priority. Medical and psychological support continues to be provided to survivors and the bereaved families.
