Jakarta mulls use of smart card
JAKARTA: The city administration is considering replacing identity cards with an integrated smart card that would contain the holder's personal information, including fingerprints.
Head of the Population and Civil Registration Agency Khamil Abdul Kadir said on Thursday the officials would first discuss the plan to make an integrated data bank with other institutions, such as the police, health agency and tax office.
"The smart card is a multipurpose one ... We have to study it first before producing it," he added.
Khamil revealed the plan after a presentation from PT Sumber Sarana Infopratama about the smart card. The meeting was also attended by Governor Sutiyoso and PT Sumber's foreign counterpart MSC Malaysia Technology.
The integrated ID card has been applied in Malaysia, which is called my card.
MSC Malaysia Technology chief enterprise officer Mohammad Suhaimi said that the country has used the card since 2000 after a seven-year trial. -- JP
