Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) Head of Public Relations Kombes Pol Budi Hermanto has warned that changes to daily routines during the holy month of Ramadan will inevitably bring increased community and economic activity, along with critical points where public order disturbances may emerge.

“The rhythm of daily life during the holy month of Ramadan will certainly differ. This means there will be increased community and economic activity, and naturally there are also critical points, namely the emergence of public order disturbances,” Budi said in a statement on Friday.

Budi identified illegal street racing and sahur on the road (SOTR) — pre-dawn meal charity convoys — as among the key public order concerns.

“The intention should be to provide food to those in need, but instead it becomes an excuse for gatherings, consuming alcoholic beverages, or even triggering brawls,” Budi said.

He called on all members of the public, particularly families, to provide guidance and steer their children’s activities in a positive direction.

Regarding the distribution of takjil (pre-iftar snacks) to motorists on the road ahead of breaking the fast, Budi urged organisers not to disrupt traffic flow for all road users.

“It shouldn’t be dangerous for both the recipients and distributors of takjil. Sometimes these are set up on fast lanes or around bends. This endangers both the recipients and the givers,” Budi said.

Meanwhile, regarding SOTR activities, he urged organisers to prepare such events thoroughly and comprehensively. He cited examples of communities, organisations, university alumni groups, or companies wishing to share with those in need.

“The regulations must be arranged — the traffic flow, how many vehicles in the convoy, where exactly the recipients are, and whether the recipients have been contacted in advance. So it’s not just an aimless convoy driving around,” Budi said.

Jakarta Metropolitan Police also urged all members of the public to work together to maintain a conducive public order situation and to comply with directions from officers in the field.

Those requiring police assistance may contact the 110 emergency service, which operates around the clock.
