Jakarta — A member of the Jakarta Regional Parliament’s Commission A, William Aditya Sarana, has requested Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung to halt construction of two crematoria in Kalideres district, West Jakarta, following strong objections from local residents who oppose the facilities being located in densely populated residential areas.

“We have just sent a letter to Governor Pramono requesting that the construction of the two crematoria located in Kalideres district be stopped immediately,” William said in Jakarta on Saturday.

William’s letter, numbered 040/DPRD/F-PSI/B/II/2026 and dated 25 February 2026, addressed concerns regarding community complaints about the crematorium development in Kalideres. The letter was received by the Jakarta Regional Government Secretariat.

William emphasised that the matter has become increasingly urgent because construction activities at the crematorium site continue despite West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainnah’s order to halt work. He expressed concern that the developers appear unwilling to engage in good faith negotiations with residents.

“Although instructed to stop, residents continue to witness heavy machinery moving through the project site,” he noted.

William reminded the Jakarta provincial government and the crematorium developers that Article 7(a) of Jakarta Regional Regulation No. 3 of 2007 explicitly stipulates that such facilities cannot be constructed in densely populated areas.

He stressed that the Jakarta provincial government must immediately halt the crematorium projects that residents in Kalideres have objected to, asserting that the facilities will further disrupt urban planning and create additional congestion in the already densely populated district.

William called on the provincial government to take immediate action and stop the crematorium construction projects.
