Jakarta hoodlums warned

SEMARANG: The police here have warned hoodlums who have moved
to this city from elsewhere to refrain from committing crimes and
acts disturbing the peace, Antara reported Saturday.

The warning was issued in view of the arrival of hoodlums from
Jakarta, Col. Murawi Effendi of the Semarang city police said.

He said Semarang police had received information that many
hoodlums from Jakarta had moved to Semarang because they thought
security agencies here were "softer" in dealing with crime.

Since receiving the shoot-on-sight order, Jakarta security
agencies have shot dead some 17 alleged street criminals over a
period of a month. "Actually we are just as hard on criminals,"
he said.

Of 37 arrested robbery suspects on the north coast, police
said they have been forced to shoot dead five.
