Jakarta East City Government Transforms Former TPS Site in Pasar Rebo into Green Space
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta East City Government (Pemkot Jakarta Timur), through the Cijantung Sub-district apparatus, has carried out landscaping of the former Temporary Waste Storage Site (TPS) area in Pasar Rebo, transforming it into a more organised and aesthetic green space. “The area on Jalan Raya Gongseng RT 07/07 in Cijantung Sub-district, previously known as a location for illegal waste dumping, has now been changed into a more organised and aesthetic green space,” said Cijantung Sub-district Head Suparmadi in Jakarta on Wednesday. The plot of land, measuring approximately 10x1 square metres, was previously often used by residents to dispose of rubbish and construction debris haphazardly. Its location next to the entrance gate to the residential area and adjacent to the Gongseng Football Field made the slum-like conditions at the site quite conspicuous. “Physically, the landscaping of this flagship area has been completed. However, we still need to finish painting the entrance gate to residents’ homes,” Suparmadi stated. The landscaping process involved seven Public Facilities and Infrastructure Handling (PPSU) personnel from early January until 31 March 2026. Currently, the final stage of painting the gate is being rushed and is targeted to be completed within the next week. In addition, the boundary wall of the Gongseng Field has been beautified with a mural depicting views of the capital with skyscrapers, blue skies, and white clouds as the background. After the landscaping, significant changes are visible in the location that was previously idle land. The area that was once slum-like now appears cleaner, tidier, and visually appealing. One local resident, Mulyadi (45), revealed that before the landscaping, the location often became a point for accumulating illegal rubbish, debris, and even as a parking spot and gathering place for street vendors’ carts. “It used to be very dirty here. Lots of rubbish, debris, even turned into illegal parking. Now it’s much tidier and pleasant to look at,” said Mulyadi. “I hope that after this landscaping, it not only beautifies the environment but also instils community awareness to maintain cleanliness and no longer use the area as a place for illegal waste dumping,” he added.
