Jakarta DPRD Urges Provincial Government to Safeguard Food Stocks Amid Middle East Conflict
The Chairman of the Jakarta DPRD, Khoirudin, has reminded the Provincial Government (Pemprov) of DKI to strengthen measures for securing food stocks in light of the heating global situation, particularly the conflict in the Middle East region. Khoirudin stated that the escalation in the Middle East, including the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, has already begun to impact neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia.
He conveyed this during the halal bi halal event with executives and legislators at the Jakarta DPRD Building on Monday (30/3/2026). He requested that Jakarta, as a city with a dense population, must prepare early.
“In a world situation that is not going well, the conflict in the Middle East, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz which has impacted our neighbouring countries, of course we must prepare, especially food security,” said Khoirudin.
Moreover, Khoirudin noted that Jakarta does not have production land for food such as rice fields or vegetable gardens, so dependence on distribution from outside the region is very high. With a daily population reaching 11.8 million people, he believes Jakarta must ensure a safe and stable supply.
“Jakarta has no rice fields, no rice plants, vegetables, or staple necessities. We must prepare everything so that residents do not panic when the impact of the Middle East hits Indonesia,” he explained.
Khoirudin asked Commission B of the Jakarta DPRD to work together with Pemprov to ensure all supply routes, food reserves, and distribution schemes run safely. He emphasised that price stability must also be maintained so that global turmoil does not trigger public unrest.
“We hope that Commission B together with Pemprov will oversee food security for Jakarta’s 11.6 million residents. When there is turmoil, residents must remain calm,” he said.
Besides the food issue, Khoirudin mentioned that harmony between the executive and legislative branches is an important asset in facing global challenges. According to him, the good cooperation that has been established so far must be maintained so that services to residents become even more optimal.
“This is the harmony that, insyaallah, we will continue to maintain to provide the best service for Jakarta residents,” he stated.
