Jakarta Customs is expanding oversight of luxury goods by inspecting dozens of private yachts in the Batavia Marina area, North Jakarta. A total of 82 yachts, whether in the waters or docked at the pier, were examined as part of efforts to boost state revenue while suppressing underground economy practices. Head of the Jakarta Customs Region Office, Hendri Darnadi, stated that this step follows government directives to ensure fiscal justice for all society. “We are carrying out this activity as a mandatory execution of duties as directed by the Minister of Finance and the President to optimise state revenue,” said Hendri on Wednesday (18/3/2026). This is because there are indications that some vessels use the modus operandi of temporary imports or foreign flags to avoid tax obligations. “We are still investigating the results further,” Hendri added. He emphasised that enforcement against luxury goods will continue sustainably, including targeting activities categorised as underground economy. “In Jakarta’s territory, we will comb through various activities that fall under the underground economy in any form,” he said. This action is a continuation of previous crackdowns on several luxury goods stores, such as imported jewellery and watch outlets. According to a World Bank report, Indonesia’s underground economy is estimated to reach 21.8% of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2015, contributing to the low effectiveness of tax collection.
