Jakarta (ANTARA) - The East Jakarta City Government has urged new migrants to postpone their arrival in Jakarta after the Lebaran holiday, particularly those who do not yet have jobs or guarantees of accommodation. “We hope that the new migrants who come are those who returned home previously. That is, they already have jobs here, then went back to their villages, and are returning to Jakarta with jobs secured,” said East Jakarta Mayor Munjirin in Pulo Gebang, East Jakarta, on Monday. The appeal was made following the increased flow of people returning to Jakarta after the Eid al-Fitr holiday. Munjirin emphasised the importance of economic preparedness for migrants to avoid adding to the social burden in urban areas. However, for those without stable employment, he suggested reconsidering plans to migrate to Jakarta, especially if they lack family or support to cover living expenses in the capital. “But if they don’t have jobs, especially if no one can support them here, we urge them to hold off if possible and not come to Jakarta yet,” Munjirin stated. The East Jakarta City Government assesses that urbanisation not matched by economic readiness could lead to various social issues, from unemployment to increased urban poverty rates. On the other hand, the city government also encourages residents with stable jobs in Jakarta to maintain productivity and comply with applicable regulations to create order and mutual comfort in the urban environment. Previously, DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung asked the public wishing to work in the capital after returning from Lebaran to prepare their personal documents. He stressed that although his administration would not conduct yustisi operations against new migrants, completing personal documents remains an obligation. “As I have repeatedly stated, there are no yustisi operations in Jakarta, but we ask anyone who wants to work in Jakarta to equip themselves with all administrative requirements,” Pramono said after an open house event at City Hall, Jakarta, on Saturday (21/3). In addition, prospective new migrants are also asked to work according to their respective capacities. As is known, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government predicts that 10,000 to 12,000 people will arrive in Jakarta after the 2026 Lebaran holiday. From 2022 to 2025, the number of new migrants in Jakarta after Lebaran has decreased successively from 27,000 to 16,000 people.
