Jakarta–Bandung Rail Options Increasingly Diverse, KAI Strengthens Connectivity to West Java Stations
Jakarta–Bandung is a corridor with continuously dynamic public mobility. Travel for work, university, family visits, tourism, and onward journeys to various stations in West Java are making the need for rail-based transport on this route increasingly diverse. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) noted that passengers from Jakarta to Bandung now have many service choices. Besides the Parahyangan Train as the main service for the Gambir–Bandung round-trip route, passengers can also use the Papandayan Train, Pangandaran Train, Cikuray Train, and Serayu Train according to their departure station, destination station, travel needs, and service preferences. Vice President Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba stated that this service diversity demonstrates that the Jakarta–Bandung journey is now increasingly flexible. Passengers can choose long-distance trains, connecting local services, or high-speed trains according to their mobility needs. “Jakarta–Bandung mobility continues to grow. Therefore, KAI offers various service options so that passengers can tailor their journey to their needs, ranging from direct trips to Bandung Station, access to Kiaracondong and Cimahi stations, to onward travel to Garut, Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, Banjar, and Purwokerto,” Anne said. The Parahyangan Train serves as a direct service from Gambir to Bandung round-trip. This train is the main choice for passengers travelling between Jakarta and Bandung, whether for work, education, family matters, or weekend tourism. With a route directly connecting two major activity centres, the Parahyangan Train plays a crucial role in supporting public mobility on the Jakarta–Bandung corridor. Throughout January–May 2026, the Parahyangan Train served 475,072 passengers, a 38.57 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025, which totalled 342,837 passengers. This growth indicates the strong demand for direct travel between Jakarta and Bandung. In addition to the Parahyangan Train, passengers from Jakarta can also use the Papandayan Train on the Gambir–Garut round-trip route. This train stops at Bandung Station, making it an option for passengers from Jakarta who wish to go to Bandung while also continuing their journey to Garut. The presence of the Papandayan Train broadens the service choice for passengers needing connectivity from Jakarta to Bandung and Garut stations. In January–May 2026, the Papandayan Train served 180,640 passengers, an 18.91 percent increase compared to January–May 2025, which totalled 151,919 passengers. This performance shows that the Jakarta–Bandung–Garut route is increasingly relevant for passengers needing travel to main stations in Bandung and Garut. Another option is the Pangandaran Train on the Gambir–Banjar round-trip route. This train also stops at Bandung Station, making it a travel alternative from Jakarta to Bandung. Furthermore, the Pangandaran Train strengthens onward access from Bandung to stations in the East Priangan region, such as Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, and Banjar. Throughout January–May 2026, the Pangandaran Train served 146,160 passengers. During the same period in 2025, the Pangandaran Train served 163,349 passengers. Although passenger volume for that period was corrected by 10.52 percent, the Pangandaran Train remains an important part of expanding connectivity between Jakarta, Bandung, and East Priangan. For passengers departing from Pasarsenen, the Cikuray Train is available on the Pasarsenen–Garut round-trip route. This train stops at Bandung Station and is one of the travel choices from Jakarta to Bandung with onward access to Garut. This service is widely used by passengers needing intercity travel at a more affordable fare. The Cikuray Train served 266,993 passengers in January–May 2026, a 7.13 percent increase from January–May 2025, which totalled 249,218 passengers. This figure shows the role of the Cikuray Train in supporting public travel from Jakarta to Bandung and Garut. Meanwhile, the Serayu Train on the Pasarsenen–Purwokerto round-trip route also serves as an alternative for passengers from Jakarta heading to stations in the Greater Bandung area. The Serayu Train does not stop at Bandung Station but serves stops such as Kiaracondong and Cimahi. Hence, the Serayu Train remains relevant for passengers wanting to reach Bandung via Kiaracondong or Cimahi stations. In January–May 2026, the Serayu Train served 568,759 passengers, a 3.14 percent increase from the same period in 2025, which totalled 551,465 passengers. This service strengthens public access from Jakarta to Kiaracondong, Cimahi, and other stations on the Pasarsenen–Purwokerto round-trip route. Besides long-distance trains, passengers can also utilise a combination of Commuter Line and local train services. From Jakarta, passengers can use the Cikarang Commuter Line to reach the Bekasi and Cikarang areas, then continue their journey using local trains to Purwakarta and stations in Greater Bandung. The Cikarang Commuter Line served 36,294,605 passengers in January–May 2026, an 8.28 percent increase from January–May 2025, which totalled 33,519,333 passengers. This service is an important part of daily mobility for Greater Jakarta residents, while also opening up onward access to local services in West Java. From the Cikarang area and its surroundings, passengers can continue their journey using the Walahar Train on the Cikarang–Purwakarta round-trip route. In January–May 2026, the Walahar Train served 1,807,649 passengers, a 7.85 percent increase from January–May 2025, which totalled 1,676,008 passengers. Additionally, the Jatiluhur Train on the Cikarang–Cikampek round-trip route is also part of local connectivity in the eastern Greater Jakarta and West Java regions.
