Note:
Dangerous: Air pollution level can seriously affect human
health.
Very unhealthy: Harmful to human health when directly
exposed to air.
Unhealthy: Harmful to sensitive people and animals.
Moderate: Harmful to sensitive plants, but not to human
beings or animals.
Good: No effect on the health of humans, animals or plants.
Dangerous air pollutants:
- Lead (Pb): Can cause health problems, such as brain damage
in children, male reproductive problems, kidney trouble.
- Sulfur Dioxide (SO2): Can cause lung problems, from
breathing problems to permanent lung damage.
- Carbon Dioxide (C02): If inhaled, can be toxic and cause
hyperventilation, unconsciousness and death.
- Nitrogen Oxide (NO3): Major contributor to smog and
acid rain; in high doses, smog can cause difficulties in
breathing for asthmatics, coughs in children and
general illness of the respiratory system.
- Ozone (O3): Can damage trees and plants and reduce
visibility.
- Particulate matter (PM), or any type of solids in the air
such as smoke, dust and vapors which remain suspended for
extended periods: Can cause cancer, bronchitis.
