ITB Expert Warns of Risks of Leaving Vehicles Unprepared During Mudik
Jakarta (ANTARA) - An automotive expert from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Yannes Martinus Pasaribu, has reminded vehicle owners not to simply park and lock their cars or motorcycles during ‘mudik’, as there are several technical risks that can arise if vehicles are left without preparation.
“We need to prepare the car or motorcycle in a safe storage condition, not just park it and lock it,” said Yannes when contacted by ANTARA from Jakarta, Wednesday.
He explained that one of the main risks is a drained battery.
If the battery is already weak, he said, the vehicle may fail to start when the owner returns from ‘mudik’.
In addition, a fuel tank that is too empty can also trigger condensation.
Therefore, Yannes advises that the tank be filled to at least three-quarters before being left.
Another risk that is often overlooked is the deformation of the tires or flat spots due to improper tire pressure.
Yannes also reminds people to clean the cabin of any leftover food or organic matter to prevent mice and mold.
“Wash the body and undercarriage of the vehicle, then make sure it is dry so that moisture does not trigger rust,” he said.
Initial checks, such as checking for fluid leaks, tire condition, engine compartment, and brake function, need to be carried out to ensure safety and optimal performance.
“Don’t just start the vehicle and drive off. It is best to do an initial check first so that our vehicle remains safe,” said Yannes.
