Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) has once again recorded a significant achievement in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. In this year’s rankings, four of ITB’s fields of study successfully entered the world’s top 150, namely Mineral & Mining Engineering and Petroleum Engineering in the 51-100 global ranking cluster, as well as Architecture & Built Environment and Art & Design in the 101-150 global cluster. Overall, ITB placed 16 fields of study in the global rankings out of 35 analysed, with two fields entering the top 100 worldwide.

This achievement reflects ITB’s sustained performance, particularly in the engineering, architecture, and design clusters. The presence of Mineral & Mining Engineering and Petroleum Engineering in the top 100 worldwide demonstrates ITB’s consistency in fields that have long been its strengths. Meanwhile, the entry of Architecture & Built Environment and Art & Design into the 101-150 global cluster also indicates positive development in creative and design fields.

In addition to those four fields, ITB also recorded good results in Chemical Engineering, ranked 201-250 worldwide, and Civil Engineering, ranked 201-275 worldwide. The inclusion of Civil Engineering in the ranked fields further adds to the representation of ITB’s disciplines in this year’s rankings.

In the Narrow Subject Rankings 2026, the number of ITB fields entering the global rankings increased to 16 from 15 the previous year. This shows that ITB’s scope of disciplines appearing in global rankings is expanding, not only in flagship fields but also in various other disciplines.

Additionally, several ITB fields occupy the top rank in Indonesia, including:

  1. Architecture & Built Environment: 101-150 global, rank 1 in Indonesia

  2. Art & Design: 101-150 global, rank 1 in Indonesia

  3. Engineering – Chemical: 201-250 global, rank 1 in Indonesia

  4. Engineering – Civil & Structural: 201-275 global, rank 1 in Indonesia

  5. Engineering – Electrical & Electronic: 251-300 global, rank 1 in Indonesia

  6. Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing: 251-300 global, rank 1 in Indonesia

  7. Engineering – Mineral & Mining: 51-100 global, rank 1 in Indonesia

  8. Petroleum Engineering: 51-100 global, rank 1 in Indonesia

  9. Chemistry: 351-400, rank 1 in Indonesia

  10. Environmental Sciences: 451-500, rank 1 in Indonesia

  11. Materials Science: 351-400 global, rank 1 in Indonesia

  12. Mathematics: 351-400 global, rank 1 in Indonesia

  13. Physics & Astronomy: 401-450 global, rank 1 in Indonesia

The field of Computer Science & Information Systems also improved from the 551-600 cluster to 451-500, Business & Management Studies from 451-500 to 401-450, and Agriculture & Forestry in the 351-400 cluster.

ITB’s positive development is also evident in the Broad Subject Areas category. This year, Engineering & Technology ranks 216 worldwide (up from 282), becoming ITB’s highest-positioned broad subject.

Meanwhile, Arts & Humanities is ranked 345 worldwide (up from 451-500), Natural Sciences at 374 (up from 401-450), and Social Sciences & Management at 374 worldwide (up from 451-500). These results indicate positive progress, both in flagship fields and in broader disciplinary groups.

ITB Rector, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tatacipta Dirgantara, stated on 26/3 that these results demonstrate ITB’s consistency in continuing to be Indonesia’s higher education institution present in global academic competition. These various achievements provide a positive picture of the quality of education, research, and ITB’s academic contributions at the international level. This also reinforces ITB’s target of becoming a top 150 world university by 2030.

“I extend my appreciation to the entire academic community and institutional support elements who continue to work together to strengthen ITB’s position globally. The various achievements attained by ITB to date are the result of collective efforts that need to be maintained and strengthened in line with the institution’s development direction,” he said.

Tata mentioned that over the past nearly one year, all elements of ITB have endeavoured to implement the institutional strategic plan gradually. Various work units, according to him, have shown good achievements, with several aspects continuing to be synergised.

“These various achievements do not appear instantly but are the fruit of collective work by all elements of ITB. We view these results as a momentum to continue strengthening synergy to enhance academic reputation and research, as well as to ensure ITB’s transformation proceeds consistently and impactfully,” he explained.

These achievements, according to Tata, become important capital for ITB to continue strengthening the quality of education, research, and scientific reputation at the international level. With a spirit of collaboration and sustainable transformation, ITB is committed to continuing to deliver impactful contributions for Indonesia and the world.
