Israeli Military Tortures One-Year-Old Toddler for 10 Hours to Force Father's Confession
The brutality of the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip has been exposed once again. A one-year-old Palestinian toddler, Karim Abu Nassar, has been reported as a victim of physical torture lasting 10 hours at the hands of Israeli forces. This action was deliberately carried out as a tool of coercion to obtain a confession from his father, Osama Abu Nassar.
This horrific incident occurred near the Al-Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza. According to gathered testimonies, the Israeli military intercepted the journey of Karim and his father with a barrage of gunfire. While Osama was taken to a checkpoint for interrogation, the unfortunate toddler was left under the control of soldiers in the field.
During the 10-hour detention, eyewitnesses reported extremely inhumane treatment of Karim. The toddler suffered burns from cigarette butts prodded across his body. Ironically, the baby’s pitiful cries due to pain from nails and sharp objects were deliberately used by the soldiers to psychologically pressure his father into yielding during the interrogation.
Karim was finally returned to his family through mediation by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in a state of severe trauma and covered in physical wounds. Meanwhile, the fate of his father remains unknown in Israeli military custody.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has strongly condemned the action, labelling it as “disgusting”. CAIR has urged the US Congress and international bodies to conduct a thorough investigation into the Israeli military’s behaviour, which continues to violate international conventions.
Human rights organisations emphasise that using children as hostages or tools of pressure in military tactics is a grave violation of international law and constitutes a clear war crime. The international community is called upon to no longer turn a blind eye to the use of toddlers as instruments of torture in conflict zones.
