Is Jakarta crime infested?

In the past few months there have been an increasing number of
hold-ups of people who have just collected money from banks. The
robbers usually ride RX-King motorcycles and are armed with
knives and pistols. One of the victims has died.

The latest case reported was the extremely daring exploits at
the information ministry on Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat. Two
employees had just collected Rp 34.4 million to pay employee
salaries. The motorcyclists were unhurried when robbing the
employees, even though they were not far from a great number of
other employees. One of the robbers even fired a bullet into the
air to facilitate the takeover. They quietly took off with their
loot, jumped the traffic lights at the first intersection and
disappeared into the traffic.

It is a big challenge for law enforcers, especially in the
circumstances of the above hold-up which took place on the
premises of the information ministry, only a short distance from
the presidential palace. It was particularly worrying because
firearms were used. If steps are not taken immediately, Jakarta
will become increasingly crime infested.
