Is it safe to leave electric cars charging overnight?

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Electric car users have several concerns, including fears that vehicle batteries may overcharge when left plugged in for extended periods. Many users often leave their cars connected to chargers overnight until the battery reaches 100%. In response, Jaecoo’s Aftersales Service Operation Manager, Bayu Agus Mustofa, confirmed that modern electric vehicle batteries are equipped with safety systems to prevent overcharging. He explained that the charging process does not directly flow into the battery but is regulated by the battery management system (BMS). The BMS is a critical component in electric vehicles that monitors battery conditions, including temperature, electrical current, and charging capacity. Once the battery is fully charged, the system automatically stops the power flow to prevent damage from excessive charging. Therefore, electric car owners need not worry about leaving their vehicles connected to the charger once the battery is full. Maintaining the battery charge within a specific range is considered beneficial for long-term battery health. Currently, almost all modern electric cars sold in Indonesia come with BMS technology as a standard battery safety feature.
