The Iranian government has officially informed the United Nations (UN) about media reports revealing plans by the United States (US) and Israel to kill its high-ranking officials, including parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister (FM) Abbas Araghchi. Tehran describes these threats as a clear example of state terrorism and a serious violation of international law. In an official letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council, as reported by Press TV on Friday (27/3/2026), Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani, expressed deep concern over the assassination plans reported in the media. “I request the attention of Your Excellency and the members of the Security Council to the reports published in the media,” Iravani stated in his letter sent on Thursday (26/3) local time. “These reports indicate that the United States and the Israeli regime have identified and designated high-ranking officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, Mr Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and the Foreign Minister, Mr Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, as assassination targets,” he added. “The reports describe the suspension of these plans as merely temporary,” Iravani said. Previously, a report from the leading media outlet Wall Street Journal (WSJ) stated that the names of these two Iranian officials had been temporarily removed from the list of officials Israel seeks to eliminate, as the US and Iran explore the possibility of peace negotiations. In his letter to the UN, Iravani emphasised that the media reports reveal an operational framework aimed at killing Iran’s highest political officials. The letter mentions that this criminal policy has been implemented systematically since the start of the unwarranted US-Israeli aggression against Iran on 28 February, which began with the assassination of the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and several other senior officials. “Such policies clearly demonstrate serious violations of the peremptory rules of international law. The conditional nature of the alleged ‘suspension’ also confirms that the threat remains real, deliberate, and ongoing,” Iravani warned. He added that these threats are the product of a “criminal mindset” that openly dismisses “rules of engagement” as “stupid”. “The use of the term ‘assassination target list’ must be seen as another manifestation of the same terrorist acts that initiated the criminal war against Iran and have so far resulted in the deaths of more than 3,000 civilians,” the letter states. Iravani also underlined that the planned policy to kill high-ranking officials of a sovereign UN member state constitutes a blatant violation of the UN Charter, a grave breach of international human rights law, and international humanitarian law.
