Tehran (ANTARA) - The Iranian Parliament has begun the process to approve a plan for implementing intelligent management of the Strait of Hormuz, according to Tasnim news agency on Monday (30/3).

Spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s Presiding Board, Abbas Goudarzi, stated that the new plan has been added to the legislative agenda after gathering more than 250 signatures from members of parliament. The Iranian Parliament itself has a total of 290 seats.

According to his statement, the plan aims to enhance the security of the waterway and collect fees in the local currency, the rial, from ships passing through.

On Sunday (29/3), senior parliamentarian Alireza Salimi said the dual emergency plan has four main objectives: ensuring maritime safety, prosecuting environmental polluters, collecting fees for pilotage services, and forming a regional development fund.

This development coincides with Iran’s tight control over the Strait of Hormuz, where since the end of last month, Iran has banned ships related to Israel, the United States (US), and their allies from passing through.

On 28 February, Israel and the US launched a joint attack on Tehran and several other cities in Iran.

The aggression killed Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei, as well as senior military commanders and civilians. Iran subsequently retaliated by launching waves of missile and drone attacks targeting several military bases and assets of Israel and the US in the Middle East.
