Iranian Ambassador Meets Jusuf Kalla to Discuss Conflict with the United States and Israel
Former Vice President Jusuf Kalla hosted the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Ambassador Mohammad Boroujerdi at his private residence in South Jakarta on Tuesday, 3 March 2026. Kalla was accompanied by former Minister of Law and Human Rights, Hamid Awaluddin. The meeting discussed the latest developments in Iran and the potential role for Indonesia in helping to resolve the conflict. After the meeting, Kalla said Boroujerdi had outlined the latest situation in Iran, including the Iranian people’s resistance and civilian casualties from the joint attacks by the United States and Israel. ‘In the discussions and the ambassador’s visit, the latest developments in Iran, as well as the Iranian people’s resistance and civilian casualties, were conveyed,’ Kalla said in his official statement. He noted that Iran hopes for support from the Muslim world, including Indonesia, and that, in principle, the Indonesian people and government support peace efforts. Kalla also mentioned that President Prabowo Subianto is prepared to act as a mediator if requested, but any mediation would require the consent of both sides and would be discussed further with the government and all parties to the conflict. ‘President Prabowo is willing to be a mediator in this conflict. Of course, this would require the consent of both sides,’ he said. On 28 February 2026, local time, the United States and Israel carried out air strikes on Iranian territory, including Tehran, causing infrastructure damage and civilian casualties. Iran retaliated with missiles and drones against Israel and American military facilities in the Middle East. In response to the conflict, Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Indonesia is ready to act as a facilitator of dialogue, and a written statement on 28 February noted President Prabowo’s willingness to travel to Tehran if both sides agreed to the step. If both sides agree, the Indonesian President would travel to Tehran to mediate, the statement said. The Indonesian government also expressed regret at the resumption of armed conflict and urged all parties to prioritise dialogue and respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Indonesia, in an official release on 1 March 2026, expressed appreciation for the Indonesian government and people’s support and welcomed the readiness of the Indonesian President to mediate. Iran also urged Indonesian officials to take a firmer stance against actions it regards as violations of international law and the UN Charter. The embassy stressed the importance of Indonesian officials taking a firm stance in condemning the aggression and crimes of the United States and the Zionist regime of Israel.
