Iran Versus US-Israel Conflict: Hundreds of Thousands of Airline Passengers Stranded in Middle East
A major escalation in the Iran-US-Israel conflict has triggered significant chaos in the global aviation sector. Multiple countries across the Middle East have closed their airspace, leaving hundreds of thousands of passengers stranded, thousands of flights cancelled, and major airports halting operations.
Airspace closures have been implemented in Israel, Qatar, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Flight tracking site FlightRadar24 showed no aviation activity in UAE airspace after the government announced a partial and temporary closure. The three major airports in the UAE serve approximately 90,000 passengers daily, making the impact on global air traffic extremely severe.
According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, the disruptions have been extensive. Flight tracking service FlightAware recorded 18,000 flights experiencing delays globally, with more than 2,350 cancelled. Operations at three major airlines have been significantly affected. In one extreme example, an aircraft from Philadelphia reached Spain before being forced to turn back, resulting in a journey lasting nearly 15 hours without landing.
Iran’s retaliatory strikes have caused damage to several facilities. Dubai International Airport and the iconic Burj Al Arab hotel sustained damage, injuring four persons. At Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport, an incident resulted in one death and seven injuries, according to posts from Abu Dhabi Airports on social media platform X.
The disruptions have prompted numerous cancellations by international airlines across the region.
