Iran Talks Continue as Trump Plans to Miss His Son's Wedding
US President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will be absent from his son’s wedding, citing the need to remain in Washington due to ‘governance-related circumstances.’ According to AFP, on Saturday (23 May 2026), a day earlier, Trump said that the Iran war had made an ‘inopportune time’ for him to attend Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding to Bettina Anderson in the Bahamas this weekend. ‘Although I would dearly like to be with my son, Don Jr., and the newest member of the Trump family, his fiancée Bettina, governance-related circumstances, and my love for the United States, do not permit me to do so,’ Trump said on his Truth Social account. ‘I feel it is important for me to remain in Washington DC, at the White House, during this critical period. Congratulations to Don and Bettina!’ he added. The White House subsequently announced changes to Trump’s travel plans, saying he would not undertake the planned weekend trip to his golf resort in New Jersey and would remain in the US capital. Trump did not explain why this is a ‘critical period,’ although it comes as talks to end the war in the Middle East appear to be reaching a critical point. Iran is considering a new US proposal, and the influential head of Pakistan’s military is heading to Tehran. Tensions with Cuba have also risen, with the United States intensifying its campaign of pressure on the island run by the communist regime by charging former president Raul Castro. The US military has also dispatched an aircraft carrier and accompanying warships to the Caribbean.
