Iran Spokesperson: Focused on Safeguarding National Interests in US Negotiations
Iran Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei stated that Iran is focused on finding the best way to safeguard its national interests in negotiations with the United States (US) rather than responding to every comment from US officials. ‘We have far more important matters to attend to, and if we spend time responding to others’ social media posts, photos, and statements, we would not be able to focus on our priorities,’ Baqaei said at a press conference on Monday. ‘We are concentrating on formulating and developing the best approach to protect Iran’s national interests,’ he added. The statement was made by Baqaei when answering IRNA’s question about why Iranian officials do not respond to various social media posts and comments from US officials regarding Iran. ‘If necessary, we will respond. We have our own style and approach and will not imitate the enemy’s methods. As a civilised, capable, and strong nation, we will respond to the enemy whenever necessary, and we have done so,’ he added. Responding to questions about long-term Iran-US peace guarantees amid President Donald Trump’s military threats, Baqaei said Iran’s strength, experience, and firmness in confronting aggressors are the main guarantees for stability and sustainability of peace. ‘Negotiators and diplomatic officials are part of the state structure and have clear responsibilities in the diplomatic arena. Currently, the focus of negotiations is to end the war, and at this stage we have not discussed the details of the nuclear issue,’ he said. He also said recent developments showing progress in Tehran-Washington talks are the result of weeks of mediation by Pakistan and several other countries. ‘We can say we have reached understanding on many issues. However, whether this means a deal will be reached soon is something no one can claim at this stage,’ Baqaei said. The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson also highlighted the contradictory stance of the United States and the two wars launched by Washington and Tel Aviv against Iran while talks were showing progress.
