Iran says renewed war with US unlikely
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is confident that a war with the United States is unlikely to happen again. However, the IRGC also warned that Tehran is prepared to respond to any attacks.
The statement came a day after Iran accused the US of violating the ceasefire in place since April and vowed retaliation following the most serious attacks since the ceasefire was imposed.
The Middle East conflict erupted in late February with US-Israeli strikes on Iran, rapidly spreading across multiple fronts and plunging global energy markets into turmoil.
According to Al Arabiya on Thursday, 28 May 2026, Mohammad Akbarzadeh, deputy political chief of the IRGC navy, said that although the likelihood of renewed conflict is low due to the enemy’s weakness, Iran’s armed forces remain fully armed.
He also warned that Iran’s military would turn the coastal regions into a graveyard for aggressors, as reported by Iranian news agency Tasnim.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Intelligence Ministry stated that the US and Israel are still attempting to overthrow the Iranian regime and divide the country.
The ministry said it has evidence that the US and Israel plan to smuggle various weapons, ammunition, and illegal communication tools, particularly Starlink satellite internet devices, into Iran to incite religious and ethnic divisions and carry out sabotage missions.
Iran and the US have engaged in weeks of verbal sparring while attempting to negotiate a peace deal, with mediation efforts led by Pakistan.
Both sides appear unwilling to compromise on key sticking points, including the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme.
Iran has blockaded the strait, crucial for global energy flows, as retaliation for the war. Meanwhile, the US has responded with counter-blockades on Iranian ports.
On Wednesday, 27 May, the IRGC navy confirmed that only ships ‘willing to comply with Iran’s orders’ will be allowed to pass through the strait.
Previously, US Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said on Tuesday that a peace deal is still possible, but the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened ‘by any means necessary.’
