Iran Closes Airspace Following Joint US-Israel Military Operations

Iran’s Civil Aviation Authority has officially announced the closure of the country’s entire airspace until further notice. This decision was taken following military escalation that occurred on Saturday, 28 February 2026.

A spokesman for Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation stated that the policy was based on a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) that had been issued. The measure forces the cancellation of all commercial flight schedules and prohibits foreign aircraft passage for national security reasons, according to Mehr News.

The airspace closure comes amid reports of missile strikes hitting the University Street area and Jomhouri district in Tehran, as reported by Fars News Agency. Meanwhile, Al Jazeera has confirmed the attacks as a joint military operation between the United States and Israel.

This escalation occurred despite intensive diplomatic efforts conducted over the preceding 12 hours. Oman’s Foreign Minister, acting as the principal mediator, had met with US Vice President JD Vance in Washington to de-escalate tensions. However, the strikes took place only two days after the latest round of indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington had concluded.

The US Embassy in Qatar has instructed all personnel and US citizens to shelter in place. Simultaneously, the Israeli military has implemented “essential activity” status throughout the country, closing schools and restricting large gatherings in anticipation of retaliatory strikes.
