Iran’s government claims that at least 555 civilians have been killed as a result of airstrikes by the United States and Israel since late February 2026. Mohammad Boroujerdi, Iran’s ambassador to Indonesia, stated that the majority of casualties were children and women who were observing Ramadan fasting at the time of the attacks.

“In this assault, to date more than 555 civilians have become victims, the vast majority of whom are children and women,” Boroujerdi said in a press statement in Jakarta on Monday, 2 March.

He elaborated that approximately 200 of the victims were primary school-aged children. According to him, the casualties were non-military civilians who were observing Ramadan fasting when the attacks occurred.

“Roughly 200 children still attending primary school have lost their lives, as well as various groups of non-military civilians who were observing Ramadan fasting have become victims,” he stated.

During the same occasion, Boroujerdi launched sharp criticism against the Israeli and US governments. He concluded that both nations demonstrated no commitment to the diplomatic channels currently underway.

“This proves once again that they do not adhere to diplomacy and do not adhere to negotiation,” he said.

He emphasised that the attacks occurred whilst Iran remained engaged in a negotiation process. Boroujerdi also referenced a statement from Oman’s Foreign Minister, whom he identified as playing a neutral mediator role in the diplomatic process.

“Once again it is proven that whilst we were at the negotiating table, they launched attacks against Iran. This has also been stated by Oman’s Foreign Minister as a non-partisan mediator,” he concluded.

As of now, there has been no official statement from either the United States or Israel regarding the casualty figures claimed by the Iranian government. The situation in the region is reported to remain tense as military operations and retaliatory strikes continue.
