JAKARTA - Global geopolitical turbulence is becoming a serious concern for the national energy sector, particularly because Indonesia still relies on energy imports to meet domestic needs. This situation is seen as potentially affecting the national energy supply if not anticipated through strengthening domestic oil and gas production.

Therefore, collaboration between the government and industry players is deemed increasingly important to bolster national energy resilience, including through accelerating exploration and increasing production in the upstream oil and gas sector.

“The current global situation shows that the energy supply chain is highly vulnerable to geopolitical turbulence. Indonesia needs to anticipate this by strengthening domestic production so as not to be too dependent on imports,” said Executive Director of the Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA), Marjolijn Wajong, at the Press Conference Road to IPA Convex 2026 in Jakarta on Tuesday (12/5/2026).

Marjolijn stated that global geopolitical dynamics should serve as a momentum for Indonesia to strengthen national energy resilience through increasing domestic oil and gas production.

According to her, opportunities for increasing national oil and gas production remain wide open because more than 50 percent of Indonesia’s oil and gas basins have not yet been explored. However, most of that potential is located in eastern Indonesia and deep-sea areas that require high technology and significant investment.

Therefore, Marjolijn believes that consistent government policies, legal certainty, accelerated permitting, and competitive fiscal schemes are important factors in attracting investment in the upstream oil and gas sector.

“Finding new reserves is the key. It is not enough to just rely on ongoing projects,” said Marjolijn.

“More aggressive exploration is needed as well as close collaboration between the government and industry players,” she continued.

“IPA Convex is an important momentum to strengthen collaboration between the government, industry players, investors, academics, and the younger generation in supporting national energy resilience and creating a more competitive investment climate,” said Teresita.

She explained that IPA Convex 2026 will feature more than 200 exhibitors and over 200 technical presentations discussing various strategic issues in the energy sector, from exploration, technology, energy transition, to upstream oil and gas investment.

The inauguration agenda will include the signing of several strategic contracts, a report from the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, and VIP visits to the exhibition area.
