Commission IV of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) has opened wide participation in discussions on revising the Livestock and Animal Health Law by involving academics to practitioners. This step is taken to ensure that the regulations formulated are more adaptive and favourable to farmers.

This was conveyed during a General Hearing of Opinions (RDPU) held by Commission IV of the DPR at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (13/4/2026). The meeting agenda discussed academic inputs related to the planned revision of the law.

Several parties were present at this forum, including Universitas Gadjah Mada, the Indonesian Association of Livestock Engineers and Graduates, the Indonesian Forum of Livestock Higher Education Leaders (FPPTPI), the Indonesian Livestock Student Senate Association (ISMAPETI), and the Livestock Technical Expertise Agency of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII).

In the forum, the speakers conveyed various inputs, from strengthening animal health systems, increasing national livestock productivity, to protecting local farmers amid global market pressures.

Member of Commission IV of the DPR RI, Endang Setyawati Thohari, stated that the involvement of academics and practitioners is important to produce targeted policies.

“Inputs from academics, practitioners, and all stakeholders are an important foundation in formulating targeted policies. This law revision must be able to address current challenges in the livestock sector while strengthening national food security in the future,” she said.

This Gerindra politician emphasised the importance of regulations that favour local farmers so they can compete amid increasingly competitive global dynamics.

“Protection for local farmers, improvement in production quality, and strengthening of animal health systems must be the top priorities in this law revision,” she added.

Through this RDPU, the DPR hopes that the revision of the Livestock Law can strengthen food security while improving the welfare of farmers and the competitiveness of the national livestock industry.
