International Women's Day 2026 Theme, Marked on 8 March
International Women’s Day, or International Women’s Day (IWD), is once again observed on 8 March 2026. This year, International Women’s Day 2026 focuses on rights, justice, and action for all women and girls. According to the United Nations’ official site, here are the key facts about International Women’s Day 2026.
About International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day on which women are recognised for their achievements without regard to differences of nationality, ethnicity, language, culture, economy or politics.
From its early years, International Women’s Day has taken on a broader global dimension for women in both developed and developing countries. The expanding international women’s movement, strengthened by four global UN conferences, has helped to make the observance a focal point for building support for women’s rights and their participation in political and economic life.
Officially recognised by the United Nations in 1977, International Women’s Day first emerged from labour movement activities in North America and across Europe in the early 20th century. The International Women’s Day celebrated on 8 March relates to the women’s movement during the Russian Revolution of 1917.
Theme of International Women’s Day 2026
On 8 March 2026, International Women’s Day, women and girls around the world will march together to demand equal rights and justice to uphold, implement, and enjoy those rights.
Currently, women have only 64 percent of the legal rights enjoyed by men worldwide. In fundamental aspects of life — including work, money, safety, family, property, mobility, business, and retirement — law systematically disadvantages women.
International Women’s Day 2026 (IWD 2026), with the theme ‘Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls’, calls for action to dismantle all barriers to achieving equal justice: discriminatory laws, weak legal protections, and practices and social norms that erode the rights of women and girls.
The world will gather at the United Nations Headquarters in New York for the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) — the UN’s largest annual forum dedicated to gender equality and women’s rights. The focus of International Women’s Day this year is clear: rights, justice, and action for all women and girls.
