Abstaining from hunger and thirst
Guarding the hearing from vice
Guarding the gaze
Guarding the tongue
Guarding the whole body from sin
Fasting in outward and inward
Sawm of the Most Privileged of the Privileged (Highest Fasting)
Highest level
Controlling the heart (qalb) from the nafs
Avoiding excessive worldly thoughts
Focusing solely on Allah SWT
The world is viewed as a field of deeds
An orientation entirely towards the Hereafter
The Verse Commanding Ramadan Fasting
O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous. (Qur’an, Surah Al-Baqarah, 183)
Arabic original:
يٰٓاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِيْنَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُوْنَۙ
Yā ayyuhal-lażīna āmanū kutiba ’alaikumuṣ-ṣiyāmu kamā kutiba ’alal-lażīna min qablikum la‘allakum tattaqūn(a).
“Wahai orang-orang yang beriman, diwajibkan atas kamu berpuasa sebagaimana diwajibkan atas orang-orang sebelum kamu agar kamu bertakwa.” (QS Al-Baqarah Ayat 183)
