The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has stated that the weather conditions in Indonesia over the next three days will generally be dominated by rain with light to moderate intensity.

Head of the BNPB Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Centre, Abdul Muhari, said that the public still needs to be vigilant against the potential for increased rain with moderate to heavy intensity in several areas.

“Vigilance is needed for increased rain with moderate to heavy intensity occurring in Aceh, West Sumatra, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, Bengkulu, Lampung, Banten, DKI Jakarta, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku, Southwest Papua, West Papua, Central Papua, and Papua,” Abdul Muhari stated, quoted from an official statement on Saturday (21/3).

BNPB has also set a heavy rain alert status in several other areas, namely West Java, Central Java, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, Central Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Maluku, and South Papua.

In addition to heavy rain, the potential for strong winds is expected in Aceh, Riau Islands, Bangka Belitung Islands, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Nusa Tenggara, North Maluku, Maluku, West Papua, Papua Mountains, and South Papua.

BNPB urges local governments and the public to increase vigilance against the potential for hydro-meteorological disasters, both wet and dry, especially ahead of the Lebaran mudik period.

“For comfort and safety during Lebaran mudik, always monitor weather conditions and landslide-prone routes. If using private vehicles, ensure they are in prime condition. If using public transportation, always maintain personal and luggage security,” he said.

BNPB also reminds the public to prepare a disaster emergency kit containing essential needs, including personal medications. Residents are asked to avoid parking or sheltering under trees or billboards during rain accompanied by strong winds due to the risk of them falling.

“Prepare a disaster emergency kit including personal medications. Avoid parking or sheltering under trees or billboards if there are strong winds or rain, avoid parking under objects at risk of falling. Keep emergency contacts for disaster handling and other emergencies,” he concluded.
