Indonesia's Internet is the Slowest in ASEAN, Speed Like a Snail
Indonesia’s internet connection speeds remain far below the global average, as reported by We Are Social in the Digital 2025 Global Overview Report. The average global mobile internet connection speed reaches 61.52 Mbps, while in Indonesia it is only 29.06 Mbps. Japan holds the world record for the fastest internet speed at 402 million Mbps, equivalent to 402 terabits per second (Tbps), far surpassing speeds in many countries, including Indonesia. In comparison, within ASEAN, Indonesia trails well behind other Southeast Asian nations such as Thailand and the Philippines, with speeds of 61.21 Mbps and 35.56 Mbps respectively. Indonesia also lags far behind Malaysia, where speeds exceed the average at 104.99 Mbps. The fastest average mobile internet speeds are found in the Middle East, specifically the United Arab Emirates, at 441.89 Mbps. For fixed internet connections, the global average is 95.10 Mbps, and Indonesia again falls short at 32.05 Mbps. The report indicates that the fastest fixed connection speeds are led by Indonesia’s neighbour, Singapore, at 324.46 Mbps.
