Government-led program becomes the world’s second-largest school meal initiative
Indonesia’s Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) has reached more than 61 million beneficiaries, positioning the country among the largest providers of school meal programs globally.
Indonesia Among Largest School Meal Programs
Indonesia has emerged as one of the countries with the largest school meal programs in the world through its Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG).
As of March 3, 2026, the program has served 61,239,037 beneficiaries nationwide, according to data from the National Nutrition Agency (BGN).
Majority of Beneficiaries Are Students
Of the total recipients, more than 49 million are school students across the country.
The program is designed to ensure that school-age children receive adequate daily nutrition while supporting their physical growth and learning ability.
Indonesia Ranks Second Globally
Data compiled by the World Food Program shows Indonesia now ranks second worldwide in the number of school meal beneficiaries.
India leads the list with around 118 million recipients, followed by Indonesia, while Brazil, China and the United States rank behind.
Program Supports Education and Health
Officials say the initiative is not only about providing meals but also improving students’ concentration and academic performance.
The government views the program as a long-term investment in building a healthier and more productive generation.
Part of National Human Development Strategy
According to BGN officials, the MBG program is a strategic policy aimed at strengthening child nutrition resilience.
By improving access to quality food in schools, the government hopes to boost both educational outcomes and the overall health of Indonesia’s young population.
With more than 61 million beneficiaries, Indonesia’s Free Nutritious Meal Program has become a major pillar of the country’s human development strategy. As one of the world’s largest school meal initiatives, it highlights Indonesia’s growing role in global efforts to combat child malnutrition and strengthen educational outcomes.
