Jakarta — The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) reported that Indonesia’s inflation in February 2026 reached 0.68 per cent on a month-on-month basis.

The February 2026 inflation figure exceeded expectations from numerous economists, who had projected inflation in the range of 0.1 to 0.2 per cent.

The BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services, Ateng Hartono, stated that the inflation increase was primarily driven by a surge in food prices corresponding with the Ramadan period.

Ateng noted that the monthly inflation was reflected in the rise of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 109.75 in January 2026 to 110.50 in February 2026.

On a year-on-year basis, inflation reached 4.76 per cent, reversing the deflation of 0.09 per cent recorded in February 2025.

On a calendar year-to-date basis, inflation remained relatively controlled at 0.53 per cent.

The commodities most significantly driving inflation included chicken meat with a contribution of 0.09 per cent, bird’s eye chilli at 0.08 per cent, fresh fish at 0.05 per cent, red chilli at 0.04 per cent, and tomato, rice, and chicken eggs, each contributing 0.02 per cent.

“The largest contributing expenditure group to monthly inflation is food, beverages, and tobacco with inflation of 1.54 per cent and providing an inflation contribution of 0.45 per cent,” Ateng stated.

By component, February’s inflation was primarily driven by volatile food prices, which contributed 0.41 per cent.

In addition, the core component also provided an inflation contribution of 0.27 per cent, driven by increases in jewellery gold, cooking oil, motor vehicles, and rice with side dishes.

Conversely, government-administered prices experienced deflation of 0.03 per cent, mainly owing to a decline in petrol prices, which contributed deflation of 0.05 per cent.

Geographically, 33 provinces experienced monthly inflation, whilst five provinces experienced deflation.
