Indonesia's car sales surge to 81,159 units in February
Indonesia’s new car sales surged unexpectedly in February 2026, rebounding sharply after a sluggish start to the year. Distribution of four-wheeled vehicles from manufacturers to dealers (wholesales) climbed above 81,000 units, signalling a return to stronger market momentum.
According to data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo), wholesales in February reached 81,159 units, up 22.1% compared to January 2026, which had registered approximately 66,000 units.
Retail sales—the distribution from dealers to consumers—also demonstrated growth. Throughout February 2026, retail sales totalled 78,219 units, an increase of 16.7% against January’s 67,009 units.
Year-on-year comparisons also showed improvement. Wholesales rose 12.2% compared to February 2025, which had achieved 72,344 units, whilst retail sales grew 11.9% against 69,872 units in the equivalent period last year.
On a cumulative basis for the first two months of 2026, national car retail sales have reached 145,228 units, representing an 8.4% increase compared to the same period last year, which recorded 134,001 units.
“February 2026’s sales movement demonstrates more dynamic activity in the national automotive market at the start of the year and reflects increased vehicle purchasing activity,” said Windy Riswantyo, Head of Corporate Communications at PT Astra International Tbk (Astra). “The momentum of Ramadan and Eid, traditionally associated with heightened consumer mobility, is expected to provide additional impetus to vehicle demand. We will continue to endeavour to present products and services suited to public needs, supported by an integrated sales and after-sales service network throughout Indonesia.”
Astra’s car sales reached 38,074 units, growing 9% month-on-month. Cumulatively, national car sales for January-February 2026 totalled 147,631 units, up 10% compared to the equivalent period last year, with Astra accounting for 72,941 units.
By brand, Toyota continued to lead the national car market. Its February 2026 sales reached 22,522 units. Second position was held by Daihatsu with 13,452 units, followed by Suzuki with 9,659 units.
Mitsubishi Motors recorded 7,008 units in sales, with Honda registering 5,385 units. Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD ranked sixth with 4,653 units sold, slightly down from January’s 4,879 units.
Other Chinese brands in the top ten included Jaecoo with 3,005 units, Mitsubishi Fuso with 2,506 units, Isuzu with 1,948 units, and Hyundai with 1,741 units.
The automotive industry has set a target of 850,000 units for national car sales this year, marginally higher than last year’s actual sales of 803,687 units.
