Banda Aceh (ANTARA) — The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), through its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme, continues to produce and distribute clean water during Ramadan to meet the needs of communities affected by flash floods in Aceh Tamiang regency.

“PMI continues to produce and distribute clean water for communities affected by the flash floods,” said Muslim M Aji, WASH Coordinator for PMI Aceh Tamiang, in a statement issued in Banda Aceh on Monday.

To date, PMI has produced 120,000 litres of clean water distributed to residents across 12 affected sub-districts in Aceh Tamiang, with volumes set to increase according to demand on the ground.

He noted that the need for clean water in the affected areas remains extremely high due to limited access to safe drinking water in the aftermath of the floods. Many residents’ wells have been contaminated by mud and waste, leaving communities highly dependent on clean water supplies from PMI and other providers.

After undergoing filtration and sterilisation, the water is distributed by tanker trucks to evacuation points and residential areas.

Muslim stressed that humanitarian services remain a priority even during the holy month of Ramadan, given the persistently high demand for clean water following the floods.

“We are ensuring that production and distribution continue as normal so that residents can meet their basic needs,” he said.

PMI also urged the public to maintain environmental cleanliness and use clean water wisely during the post-disaster recovery period.

“Together with volunteers, we continue to monitor conditions across the 12 affected sub-districts. As long as the need remains, PMI will be there providing clean water services for the community,” Muslim M Aji said.
