Indonesian Red Crescent receives $100,000 from Taiwan for Sumatran disaster relief
Jakarta – The Indonesian Red Crescent (PMI) has received a donation of $100,000 (US dollars) from Taipei Economic and Trade Office in Indonesia (TETO) to assist victims of flooding in Sumatra.
PMI General Chairman Jusuf Kalla stated in Jakarta on Wednesday that in late November 2025, the Sumatran region was struck by a tropical cyclone phenomenon causing extreme weather, heavy rainfall, and floods and landslides resulting in serious damage.
On 11 March 2026, Ambassador Bruce Chen-jung Hung presented the donation of $100,000 to the PMI to help manage the disaster in Sumatra.
According to Kalla, humanitarian cooperation of this kind is vital for strengthening solidarity between nations.
“We express our gratitude for the solidarity and concern of Taiwan’s Government towards those affected by the disaster in Sumatra. This assistance will help the PMI provide humanitarian services to survivors, particularly in meeting basic needs and supporting their recovery process,” he said.
Ambassador Hung expressed hope that the donation would help provide temporary shelter, daily necessities, and assistance tools for families in need, as well as support disaster victims during difficult times.
Taiwan and Indonesia maintain very good relations, with more than 400,000 Indonesians currently living, working, and studying in Taiwan.
The Ambassador stated Taiwan is prepared to cooperate with the PMI to assist reconstruction efforts following the disaster, praying for peace and prosperity in Indonesia, and hoping that with various forms of assistance, victims will successfully rebuild their lives and return to normal.
As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue to uphold the principle of “feeling others’ difficulties as if they were our own” in providing assistance to those affected by disasters and fulfilling humanitarian responsibilities at the global level.
