Indonesian Parliament Takes VDNI and OSS Environmental Pollution Cases to Working Committee
Kendari (ANTARA) - The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has brought environmental pollution cases in the industrial zone of PT Virtue Dragon Industry Nickel Industry (VDNI) and Obsidian Stainless Steel (OSS) to the Working Committee (Panja) of Commission XII together with relevant ministries.
Commission XII member Rocky Candra, speaking in Kendari on Friday, said that Commission XII is currently visiting Southeast Sulawesi following reports related to environmental issues concerning the red rating under the Company Performance Rating Assessment Programme (Proper) received by PT VDNI and PT OSS since 2021.
"We are investigating this thoroughly and have requested statements from VDNI and OSS," said Rocky Candra during a discussion with PT VDNI and PT OSS in Kendari.
He explained that his office had also received reports that more than 5,000 residents had sought treatment at community health centres for acute respiratory infections (ISPA).
"This is also a notable concern regarding environmental impact. This is also connected to the red Proper rating," Rocky Candra explained.
He disclosed that Commission XII would escalate the matter to the Ministry of Environment to deploy a team to inspect all environmental cases in the PT VDNI and PT OSS zones in Morosi subdistrict, Konawe Regency, Southeast Sulawesi.
"So that the Law Enforcement division from the Ministry of Environment can examine all of this," he said.
Rocky Candra affirmed that following the meeting with the two companies, his office would reconvene on the case together with the Working Committee (Panja) of Commission XII, the Ministry of Environment, and the Directorate General of Minerals and Coal (Minerba).
"Yes, we will bring this to the Panja," Rocky Candra stressed.
Meanwhile, PT OSS representative Mr Wang, speaking through a spokesperson, conveyed that the company would review the relevant regulations following the meeting.
"We at OSS will certainly comply with the existing regulations in Indonesia. We were not aware of this information and will first look deeper into what has actually happened. Once we understand the situation, we will certainly comply," he added.
