Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) received the arrival of Indonesia’s first submarine rescue vessel, KRI Canopus-936, at the Kolinlamil Jakarta dock on Monday.

The arrival of the vessel was directly received by Deputy Minister of Defence Donny Ermawan Taufanto, TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto, Navy Chief of Staff Muhammad Ali, and all TNI AL officials.

“This vessel is the first submarine rescue ship that we possess,” said Ali during a press conference at the Kolinlamil Jakarta dock.

Ali stated that KRI Canopus-936 is the result of a collaboration between the German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen (A&R) and PT Palindo Marine, where the domestic component content reaches 60 percent.

The vessel, according to Ali, is equipped with various technologies, including the Hydrographic Survey Launcher (HSL), Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV), and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).

“That equipment is used to conduct hydrographic, oceanographic, geophysical surveys, and detailed mapping of the seabed,” said Ali.

In addition to monitoring underwater areas, the vessel is also functioned for military operations such as submarine route mapping, sea mine detection, security patrols, and maritime intelligence support.

Ali explained that KRI Canopus-936 is also capable of carrying out search and rescue (SAR) missions in water, including emergency signal detection and searching for objects on the seabed.

With this technology, according to him, TNI AL can search for submarines that have experienced accidents and sunk in the sea.

Not only equipped with a variety of advanced technologies, this vessel is also supported by soldiers who have been trained to operate all the technology on KRI Canopus-936.

There are 93 personnel of KRI Canopus-936 who have been trained for seven months in hydrography.

“They underwent training in Germany, and previously they also carried out training and education in France and Indonesia. We already have a hydrography school,” explained Ali.

Ali hopes that with the presence of KRI Canopus-936, TNI AL can conduct underwater monitoring and sea accident rescue missions more maximally.
