Indonesian MP Backs RI Troops for Gaza ISF, Hopes Mandate Does Not Shift to Military Operations
Nurul Arifin, a member of House of Representatives Commission I from the Golkar Party faction, has expressed support for the deployment of Indonesian troops to Gaza as part of the International Stabilisation Force (ISF), whilst offering several caveats regarding the planned mission.
“We have always voiced our support for Palestine. When there is an opportunity to contribute directly to maintaining stability and helping civilians, it naturally becomes part of our moral and political responsibility,” Nurul told reporters on Tuesday (24/2/2026).
Nurul assessed that Indonesia’s participation in Gaza could also strengthen its position in international forums as a country actively engaged in global peacekeeping efforts. She noted that Indonesia’s track record in various peacekeeping missions serves as an important asset for carrying out the Gaza mission.
Nurul further observed that the Gaza mission could benefit the capacity-building of TNI soldiers in conducting non-combat operations in conflict zones. “Experience like this is important, because future global security challenges will not always take the form of conventional warfare. Many situations require the presence of troops to maintain stability without involvement in combat operations,” she said.
Stability, according to Nurul, is a primary prerequisite for the reconstruction and social recovery process in Gaza. Without security guarantees, the distribution of aid and rebuilding of infrastructure would be difficult to carry out optimally.
Nurul also urged the government to ensure a clear mandate and open communication with the public regarding the mission. She stated that as long as the mandate remains firm and does not shift towards military operations, the mission represents a constructive step.
“As long as the mandate is firm, focused on civilian protection and humanitarian efforts, and does not shift towards military operations, I see this as a constructive step,” she said.
Indonesia is considered to meet the relevant criteria as it plans to deploy up to 8,000 TNI personnel in the ISF operation in Gaza. The total combined force to be stationed is expected to reach approximately 20,000 personnel.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that the primary objective of deploying troops to Gaza is to protect civilians on both sides and to participate in humanitarian efforts. He affirmed that Indonesia will not conduct military operations by sending troops to Gaza.
“This position will also facilitate what has been our goal and intention in sending troops to the ISF,” Sugiono said on Friday (20/2).
