Insurgents kill Indonesian, wound Filipino in Iraq
An Indonesian worker and two Iraqis were killed during an ambush in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Sunday in an attack that also wounded a Filipino, Iraqi police said. Police said the two foreigners, contractors working for a foreign company, were attacked by insurgents who cut off their vehicle and opened fire as the men drove towards their compound. The identity of the Indonesian has not been released. The Iraqis killed were a driver and a bodyguard. Foreign contractors have been targetted before by insurgents in Mosul, a hotbed of resistance to the U.S. -- Reuters
Venezuelan plane crashes, 25 killed
A Venezuelan air force plane carrying three crew members and 22 passengers crashed in bad weather in central Venezuela, killing all on board, an aviation official said on Sunday. Rescue workers located the wreckage of the twin-prop Short C-23 Sherpa in the foothills of a mountain range near the city of Mariara, and no survivors had been found, a spokesman for Venezuela's Civil Aviation Search and Rescue Center said. The passengers were a mixture of military personnel and civilians, including five children, who had been on a "recreational trip" to Orchila island, the spokesman said. -- Reuters
Clashes erupt in Bangladesh
Clashes between police and opposition supporters erupted across Bangladesh on Sunday in the aftermath of grenade attacks on a rally that killed 17 people. Officials said supporters of the opposition Awami League of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina attacked a train, a railway station and damaged cars and shops. In the capital, police used bamboo sticks to chase away groups of Awami League supporters and witnesses said there were some injuries in the clash and several vehicles were damaged. -- Reuters
Robbers steal 'The Scream'
Armed robbers stole a version of The Scream and another masterpiece by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch on Sunday in a bold daytime raid on an Oslo museum packed with terrified tourists. Two masked robbers ran into the Munch Museum, threatened staff with a gun and forced people to lie down before taking The Scream, an icon of existentialist angst showing a waif-like figure against a blood-red sky, and Madonna. They escaped in a dark-colored car driven by a third man. The pictures, worth millions of dollars and among Munch's best-known works, were later cut from their frames which were found in another part of the city. -- Reuters
