Indonesian government urges regions to monitor food prices during Ramadan
He made the call during a regional inflation coordination meeting in Jakarta on Monday, following price increases in several regions during the first week of Ramadan. Commodities affected include bird’s-eye chilies, garlic, and beef. Tohir said monitoring at the farmer level shows stocks and prices remain relatively stable. However, prices at the distributor level have risen, exceeding the maximum retail price (MRP). He urged local governments and TPIDs to take firm action against distributors selling above the legal limit. Tohir also called on the state logistics agency Bulog to help stabilize rice prices in regions experiencing increases, including by boosting supply where necessary. He said such measures are needed to prevent rice prices from surpassing the MRP and to support the government’s rice self-sufficiency efforts. Maintaining stable prices would improve public access to essential goods, he added, urging inflation control teams to optimize their interventions. “If we can maintain this momentum in controlling basic commodity prices, this year’s Eid al-Fitr will be the best yet in terms of price stability,” Tohir said.
