Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo Monitors Conditions of Indonesians After 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake in Northern Japan
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Tokyo, Japan, is intensively monitoring the conditions of Indonesian citizens (WNI) in areas affected by a major 7.4 magnitude earthquake in northern Japan on Monday afternoon local time.
The Coordinator of Social and Cultural Information Functions at KBRI Tokyo, Muhammad Al Aula, stated that they are continuously coordinating intensively with local authorities to obtain the latest information regarding the earthquake and tsunami.
“In line with that, monitoring of the current conditions of WNI is also being carried out through regular communication with Indonesian community nodes, particularly in Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido prefectures,” said Al Aula, according to a written statement from KBRI Tokyo on Monday.
He conveyed that, to date, they have not received any reports of WNI affected by the major earthquake.
Meanwhile, KBRI Tokyo has opened emergency services for affected WNI as well as inter-community information services to facilitate monitoring of WNI conditions there, he said.
KBRI Tokyo continues to urge WNI to remain calm and to continue monitoring developments in tsunami warnings and to follow instructions from local authorities.
“All WNI should always follow instructions from the local government if evacuation to safe places is necessary,” he said.
WNI are also asked to stay away from water bodies and beaches and to prepare emergency bags containing sufficient food and drink, lighting equipment, power banks, and cash.
“For personal safety, WNI are urged to continue communicating with fellow WNI and to inform their closest family members,” said Al Aula.

A major 7.4 magnitude earthquake rocked Japan on Monday local time, with tsunami warnings announced in northern and north-eastern Japan.
The earthquake was recorded at 07:52 GMT (14:52 WIB), with the epicentre located 71 kilometres from Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture, according to records from the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), shortly after the earthquake, issued tsunami warnings for the Aomori, Hokkaido, and Iwate regions along the Pacific Ocean coast.
