Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) member Syamsu Rizal, from the PKB faction, supports President Prabowo Subianto’s plan to evaluate Indonesia’s position within the Board of Peace (BoP) following the United States and Israel’s attacks on Iran. He said the move is appropriate to uphold the constitutional mandate and the nation’s commitment to world peace.

The politician known as Deng Ical stated that unilateral US strikes against Iran over the weekend have undermined the BoP’s credibility as a guardian of global stability. ‘Israel and the United States’ attack on Iran has seriously weakened the Board of Peace. It tarnishes the image of an organisation that should be at the forefront of safeguarding world peace,’ Deng Ical said in a statement on Friday, 6 March 2026.

Deng Ical emphasised that Indonesia’s option to withdraw from BoP membership should be considered seriously if the body fails to fulfil its functions, namely realising peace, ensuring humanitarian access, and protecting civilians. He argued that the reported attack which reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would constitute a grave violation of international law that cannot be justified by any reason.

‘Indonesia’s membership in international forums must align with the constitutional mandate. If an institution no longer remains faithful to its mandate, a comprehensive evaluation is warranted. The world needs de-escalation and dialogue, not unilateral actions that escalate the situation,’ he said.

The idea of evaluating Indonesia’s BoP membership emerged after President Prabowo held a long three-and-a-half-hour discussion with former presidents, vice-presidents, and political figures at Istana Merdeka on Tuesday, 3 March 2026.

Former Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda, who attended the meeting, confirmed that the President is giving special attention to the BoP’s fate in light of the Middle East escalation. ‘With the latest developments, it indeed must be evaluated,’ Hassan said.

He cited questions such as the mechanism for disarmament and who would carry out operations on the ground.
