Indonesian Consulate General in San Francisco Provides Consular Services for Indonesians in Alaska
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in San Francisco, California, United States (US), is providing Warung Konsuler services for Indonesian citizens in Anchorage, Alaska, during a visit on 11–12 April 2026, as an effort to expand access to services in remote areas.
According to a press release from KJRI San Francisco on Thursday (16/4), the visit aims to strengthen public services while tightening relations with the Indonesian community and diaspora in the most remote area of its accreditation.
During the event, KJRI San Francisco provided direct passport renewal services and consular consultations to around 40 Indonesian nationals who attended. This service offers a solution to the geographical challenges of Alaska, which is separated from the US mainland, resulting in limited access to consular services until now.
Consul General Yohpy Wardana emphasised the importance of the state’s presence for all Indonesians abroad.
“Every Indonesian citizen, regardless of geographical distance, is entitled to optimal public services,” he said.
“The presence of KJRI San Francisco in Anchorage is a concrete commitment to ensure the state is present, while facilitating access to services without requiring long journeys to San Francisco,” he added.
In addition to providing public services, the visit was also used to strengthen diaspora networks as strategic partners in supporting Indonesia’s diplomacy in the US.
The meeting served as a forum for dialogue to gather diaspora aspirations and identify cooperation opportunities in economic and socio-cultural fields. On that occasion, the Indonesian community in Anchorage expressed their commitment to continue playing an active role in promoting Indonesia at the local level.
KJRI records indicate there are around 150 to 200 Indonesian nationals and diaspora in Alaska, with the largest concentration in Anchorage. Although the number is relatively small, this community is known to be solid and mutually supportive.
One diaspora member in Anchorage, Mila Atchison, stated that the family spirit is the main key to the sustainability of the Indonesian community in the area.
As Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage holds a strategic position as a logistics and transportation hub connecting North America and Asia. The city is also supported by leading sectors such as energy and trade.
The profile of the Indonesian diaspora in Anchorage reflects this dynamic, with most working in the oil and gas sector, logistics, rail transportation, culinary, and as companions for US citizens with children holding dual limited citizenship.
Besides its role as a logistics hub, Anchorage is also supported by Alaska’s significant energy sector, which is vital to the US economy. The North Slope region is estimated to hold around 22 billion barrels of oil and 124 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, with additional potential of up to 590 trillion cubic feet of shale and tight gas as technology advances.
Beyond the energy sector, Alaska also excels in fisheries, particularly commodities like King salmon and Alaskan King Crab, which have high economic value.
