The Indonesian government has called for de-escalation and peaceful dialogue following heightened armed tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Indonesia has assured that all Indonesian citizens (WNI) in both countries remain safe amid escalating cross-border attacks.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela stressed the importance of de-escalation and dialogue as an initial step to ease tensions. “Indonesia hopes both countries can resolve the issue peacefully, prioritising dialogue and de-escalation,” Nabyl said in a press statement in Jakarta on Friday (27 February).

He noted that such measures are crucial to prevent civilian casualties amid the worsening security situation. The government continues to monitor the safety of Indonesian citizens in affected areas. “We also need to pay attention to the safety of civilians, as well as Indonesian citizens in both countries,” he added.

Acting Director of WNI Protection at the Foreign Ministry, Heni Hamidah, confirmed that all Indonesian citizens in Afghanistan and Pakistan remain safe despite armed contact reported in several areas. She stated that the Pakistani military strikes reportedly directed towards Kabul have not affected Indonesian citizens. “All Indonesian citizens in Afghanistan are reported to be in safe condition,” she said.

The Indonesian Embassy in Kabul has issued advisories to Indonesian citizens to heighten vigilance, limit activities outside residences, avoid government areas and crowded locations, and maintain intensive communication with the embassy.

According to Foreign Ministry data, the number of Indonesian citizens in Afghanistan stands at 43 people, with 15 of them belonging to the extended family of the Indonesian Embassy in Kabul.

Pakistan has reportedly launched airstrikes on Nangarhar and Paktika provinces. Afghan authorities have stated that these strikes have caused casualties and injuries among civilians, including women and children. In response, on Thursday (26 February) evening local time, Afghanistan announced the commencement of large-scale military operations against Pakistani forces along the border.

This development has heightened tensions in the region and raised concerns about conflict escalation if both sides do not exercise restraint.
