JAKARTA — The Indonesian Ambassador to Iran, Rolliansyah Soemirat, commonly known as Roy, has confirmed that 329 Indonesian nationals (WNI) in Iran are currently safe.

According to reports on 2 March 2026, the security status of Indonesians in Iran was obtained from information compiled by the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran (KBRI) from representatives in various cities.

Ambassador Roy stated that the number of Indonesian nationals currently in Iran could potentially exceed 329, as there are a number of Indonesians who have not yet registered, particularly those working as ship crew members who are often not recorded as permanent residents.

He emphasised that the embassy cannot yet predict developments in the near term, including the possibility of further attacks. Nevertheless, the KBRI is assured to remain on high alert to anticipate various scenarios that may occur in the near future.

In response to these dynamics, Ambassador Roy stated that the KBRI has issued several advisories, including limiting outdoor activities, avoiding mass demonstrations, and seeking shelter.

According to him, what is most important at present is to trust individual assessments regarding security and safety, whilst maintaining open communication channels for Indonesians wishing to relocate to safer areas.

“In this regard, we cannot impose a certain standard, that this is already very dangerous, you must do this or that. Because in some cases, they say they have not yet felt any direct threat to their security and safety,” Roy told ANTARA.

Regional tensions escalated on 28 February after the United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran, killing several senior Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran subsequently retaliated with a series of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, US assets, and several Gulf states in self-defence.

Six Indonesian nationals in Iran are currently sheltered at the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran.

“We have already accommodated a number of Indonesian nationals at the embassy for safety, but more because their schools or employers happened to vacate their dormitories. So they did not know where to go, so we accommodated them — not necessarily because of a threat,” Roy said.
